Our Mission

To serve children living with different-abilities in a therapeutic setting, designed to meet their individual needs.

We believe that children with special needs and different abilities are best served by a broader community of care. We coordinate with parents, guardians, teachers, therapists, and doctors to provide appropriate instruction and a safe and encouraging environment so these exceptional children have exceptional futures.

“I have met all the staff and seen firsthand the love, understanding, and how caring they are to the children there. This place is truly a blessing for our grandson.”

– Ronald Staton

The Champions Center (formerly known as DCEC) was established in 1974 and is the only preschool/Day Center that serves children with special needs and different abilities in Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee Counties. In the early years, a handful of children were served in a small location.  Today, we serve approximately 100 and their families each year. We pride ourselves on providing a loving and caring environment where these children can maximize their potential and build on their unique strengths.

Our child-centered curriculum focuses on each student’s individual strengths and needs. We serve children ages 6 weeks to 10 years of age.

“I don’t know where my daughter Bethany would be without The Champions Center... They provide the help that we desperately need and have become family to us."

– Amanda Campbell, Parent

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of The Champions Center for Special Children. From the very first group of children served, we have worked diligently to provide opportunities for special children to learn in a adaptive, therapeutic environment. Originally known as the Developmental Center for Exceptional Children - DCEC, the program has grown to be a vital support for children and families who live with different-abilities. Our mission to help special children thrive is stronger than ever and it’s time to celebrate! So many of you, have played a crucial role in the impactful history of this program and we encourage you to participate in the story-telling and celebrations throughout the year.
